• Cult-K: On Belonging: Hannah Arendt and Tradition

    (James McFarland, Vanderbilt University)
The political theorist Hannah Arendt spent her life reflecting on what it means to belong--to a nation, a religion, a race, a gender, a political movement, a cultural tradition, a legal system, the human species--and what the necessary possibilities and inevitable dangers of belonging might be. Reading some seminal essays while considering the historical and political circumstances to which they were responding, we'll try to glean Arendt's attitude toward this dimension of collective life.
